Best Moments From the 2026 USATF Outdoor Championships

Sunday marked the conclusion of the 2026 USATF Outdoor Championships and with it some exciting finishes. The highlight of Day 1 came in the last event of the day; the 10,000m. The 10,000m is one of track's most strategic races, and that showed during the women's race. The field, containing contenders like seasoned vets Katie Izzo and Allie Buchalski, and promising rookie Sydney Vaught, opened in a historically slow first half with an over 18-minute 5000m split. However, Sydney Vaught took the reins in the second half, splitting a 15:21 final 5000m to take home gold, followed closely by Izzo and then Buchalski. The men's 10000m race was an even better watch. Oregon's Luke Tewalt led the pack to a relaxed first half (similar to the women's race) until race favorite and Olympic medalist Grant Fisher took over on the 16th lap and started to break away seemed to have the race in the bag, until Woody Kincaid had a crazy kick to close in a sub 55 sec 400m to pass Fisher in the final 100 meters to win the gold.

Day 2 had its share of excitement as well. In the women's 100m final, Sha'Carri Richardson reasserted her dominance with a winning time (and season best) of 10.77 seconds. This marked her third US 100m national title, becoming the first American woman to do so. Kayla White took second with a time of 10.90s and Tamari secured third with a time of 11.00s. In the men's 100m final, Noah Lyles, like Richardson, also won his third 100m national title in a blistering time of 9.79 seconds, matching his personal best. After trailing early, Lyles finished strong with a lightning quick final stretch. In a surprising upset, Ronnie Baker managed to just edge out Kenny Bednarek by less than a hundredth of a second to take second with a time of 9.88 seconds.

A historic precedent was set in the women's 1500m race on Day 3. Nikki Hiltz won her ninth consecutive USATF national title across indoor, outdoor, and road championships, continuing her historic streak. Hiltz had to counter an aggressive attack from race favorite Addy Wiley, and then outkick her to claim gold, while Emily Mackay came in third in a three-way photo finish. The night ended with the women's 100m hurdles, and first outdoor 100m national title for hurdler Alia Armstrong. Armstrong ran a flawless race to achieve victory in a season best of 12.38 seconds. Olympic long jump champion Tara Davis-Woodhall, in her return to hurdles after 5 years, came in third behind Armstrong and second place Alaysha Johnson.

Day 4 had more drama in store for Davis-Woodhall. On her final jump, Davis-Woodhall appeared to snatch the victory with a massive 7.16-meter jump. However, after a protest, judges ruled that Davis-Woodhall fouled on the take-off board. The jump was scratched, handing Davis-Woodhall her first long jump defeat in three years. Rising star Alyssa shined in the long jump and won gold with a jump of 6.96m, while Monae' Nichols won second and Tara Davis-Woodhall received third. Day 4 also saw a dominant showing from 17-year-old phenom Cooper Lutkenhaus (my personal favorite runner right now) in the 800m final. Lutkenhaus took home an impressive victory over multiple veteran contenders, including former world champion Donavan Brazier. Lutkenhaus, with a burst of speed at around the final 200m mark, left the rest of the field behind and crossed the finish line with a time of 1:43.48, shattering the U18 record. The men's 200m final took an unexpected turn when reigning world champion Noah Lyles, who had already won the 100m title earlier in the meet, pulled up in the homestretch with a leg cramp. This opened the door for USC's Garrett Kaalund, who sprinted to his first U.S. outdoor national title in 20.04 seconds. After the race, Lyles reassured fans that the issue was only cramping and not a serious injury.

The 2026 USATF Outdoor Championships delivered four days of memorable performances, dramatic finishes, and historic milestones. From veteran champions defending their titles to rising stars announcing their arrival on the national stage, the meet showcased the depth and excitement of American track and field. These athletes certainly show a lot of promise for Team USA on the international stage.
